Pickup or Delivery: How Ordering Works at Rock Soft
How to place a pickup or delivery order with Rock Soft, what to have ready, timing windows, and when one option beats the other.

Pickup and delivery are the two ways to receive an order from Rock Soft. Pickup means you choose a time window, we prepare the order for that slot, and you collect it at the counter. Delivery means we route the finished order to the address you provide, within the service radius we cover.
That's the short version. The longer version matters if you're ordering for a group, a tight schedule, or something that doesn't travel well. Below is how we actually run both channels, what to confirm before you hit send, and when one beats the other.
How does pickup work and when should you choose it?
Pickup is the faster path when you're nearby or already moving in our direction. You place the order, we confirm a ready-by time, and the item waits at the counter under your name. If you're coordinating a group, pickup gives you one less variable: you control the handoff.
A customer calls sure they need delivery for a lunch meeting across town. We check the route. Pickup on their walk back from a client site would've landed the food twenty minutes earlier. That changes the plan.
Pickup works best when:
- You're within a short walk or drive of our location at 1 S Wacker Dr Ste 1200.
- Your order includes items that lose quality in transit (texture, temperature, presentation).
- You want to inspect the order before leaving.
- You're on a tight schedule and can't risk a driver delay.
- You're paying with a method the driver can't process at the door.
If none of those apply, delivery is probably the better call. Before you order either way, it helps to run through what to have ready so the confirmation goes through on the first try.
How does delivery work and what affects the timing?
Delivery runs on a window, not a promise of a single minute. When you place the order, we quote a range based on current queue, prep time for your specific items, and the route to your address. The quote tightens as the order moves through prep. You'll get a confirmation when it leaves our hands.
Three things move the window:
Order complexity, distance, and traffic. Of the three, complexity is the one most people underestimate. A simple order to a far address often beats a complex order to a near one. Ask us about prep time if timing is critical. We'll tell you honestly.
What's the difference between pickup and delivery at a glance?
| Factor | Pickup | Delivery |
|---|---|---|
| Speed to you | Faster if you're nearby | Depends on route and queue |
| Cost | No delivery fee | Delivery fee applies |
| Best for | Solo orders, tight schedules | Groups, offices, no-car trips |
| Watch out for | Parking, your own travel time | Address accuracy, buzzer codes |
Most people ask first about delivery fees. That's the wrong first question. Ask about the ready time, because a ten-minute wait at the counter costs more than a delivery fee if you're billing hourly.
What should you confirm before placing either order?
Confirm the address or pickup window first. Then confirm the contact phone, because almost every delivery problem traces back to a phone that doesn't answer. For larger or occasion-based orders, our notes on choosing for an occasion will help you avoid last-minute changes.
A few things to double-check:
- Spelling of the recipient's name on the order.
- Full address including suite, floor, or unit number.
- Buzzer code or reception instructions if applicable.
- A reachable phone during the delivery window.
- Payment method and any corporate billing reference.
Call us if you're not sure. (312) 476-1000. A thirty-second conversation prevents the kind of problem that costs you an hour of your afternoon, and it's usually faster than typing out a long note in the order form.
FAQ
Can I switch from delivery to pickup after I've ordered?
Yes, if the order hasn't entered final prep. Call us as soon as you know. We'll update the ticket, refund any delivery fee that was charged, and give you a pickup-ready time. Once the order is handed to a driver, switching gets harder because the item is already in motion.
What happens if I'm late to pickup?
Nothing dramatic. We hold the order and keep it in appropriate conditions for a reasonable window. If you're going to be significantly late, call ahead so we can time any finishing steps correctly. Items that are time-sensitive to quality may be remade, and we'll let you know if that's the case.
How do you handle delivery to office buildings with security?
Give us the full access details when you order: reception desk, floor, suite, and any required check-in. Our drivers will call on arrival. If reception won't release the driver to your floor, we'll meet you in the lobby. Clear instructions upfront prevent the ten-minute lobby loop that frustrates everyone.
Is there a minimum order for delivery?
Minimums depend on distance and item type. Call Rock Soft or check the order form, which flags the minimum before you submit. For small orders below the threshold, pickup is almost always the better route.
